This month sees us celebrating a rather impressive (even if I do say so myself) milestone: our one hundredth issue! The magazine was first printed in February 2010, born of a belief that contract catering was a large and important enough sector to warrant its very own publication.
Of course, a lot has changed in that time, least of all the switch to B&I Catering from FSM, which came about in June 2015. This was done so that we could focus even further on the area – business and industry – that dominates contract catering (we also have magazines to cover sub-sectors such as sports and leisure catering (SLC magazine), schools (EDUcatering) and universities (TUCO) – go to www.h2opublishing.co.uk if you would like to receive them).
Casting an eye back over our first edition is a bit of a blast from the past; literally the first article you come to is the news story ‘Sodexo wins multi-million pound bid for London Olympics’. There’s also a feature from Jane Renton following this up, and our old friend Charles Campion contributes a column asking ‘Is Mexican the next big thing?’ Thomasina Miers, of some new kid on the block called Wahaca, tells him: “It has only just begun to make waves in the UK.”
There is also mention of the British Hospitality Association and Charlton House was yet to become part of CH&Co; though very little, if any, believe it or not, of street food (or ‘food trucks’, as the outlets were often referred to back then). It will be fascinating to see what develops over the next 100 issues – we will endeavour to keep you abreast of it all…
